Dr. Amit MitraFormer finance minister of Bengal and the current Special Advisor to the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr. Mitra is known for his expertise in economic policy-making and has been instrumental in transforming the state’s economy during his tenure as the Finance Minister.

Amit Mitra, born on December 20th, 1947 in Kolkata, is the son of Bela Mitra, a former Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, and Haridas Mitra, a freedom fighter. His maternal grandfather was Suresh Chandra Bose, the elder brother of the great freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose. 

With an impressive international teaching career that began as a distinguished professor at Duke University and Franklin & Marshall College, Dr. Mitra later led the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). He played a key role in professionalizing the organization’s research and policy formulation during India’s economic liberalization.

“There were times when what we perceived as policy interest for the country may not be consistent with a business group. That’s when you have to convince them, you have to be on the ball,” – Dr. Amit Mitra during a meeting at FICCI.

Dr. Amit Mitra had no prior inclination towards politics, however, he was invited by Mamata Banerjee, the leader of All India Trinamool Congress, to join the party. Subsequently, he decided to participate in politics and campaigned tirelessly for the 2011 elections against the incumbent Finance Minister of the state, Asim Dasgupta. Amit emerged victorious and was appointed as a minister with the Finance and Excise portfolio, where he successfully turned around the state’s struggling economy.

Amit Mitra, a prominent politician, launched a campaign at Khardaha against the incumbent Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta. Mitra criticized Dasgupta’s handling of the state’s finances and promised to bring in new policies that would benefit the people.

Dr. Mitra is a mastermind in economics and policy. He’s advised the Indian government and served on the boards of prominent corporations. He’s been awarded with the fourth highest civilian award – Padma Shree Award from the Government of India, Sears-Roebuck Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Order of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan, and the President Italy Award.
