Being a small hill station in the Northeast, Kalimpong doesn’t offer much but still there are a few things to do in Kalimpong that you would enjoy. The place is perfect to spend some peaceful time with friends and family or with yourself watching sun going down the hill or rising from behind the mountains. The major attractions of Kalimpong, apart from its breathtaking natural beauty, are the awe-inspiring monasteries. The hill station is ideal for paragliding and relishing some delicious Tibetan, Thai and Chinese cuisine. Besides, you can also go on a small shopping spree and buy some interesting stuff from the markets here.

Binge on Tibetan food: Yes, binging on Tibetan food is something everyone does when holidaying in a place like Kalimpong as the place has heavy influence of Tibetans since a long time. This lovely little hillock is known for its tempting and flavourful preparations of Thai and Tibetan cuisine. There are myriad restaurants and cafes that serve different flavours on your plate. Here you will find myriad roadside stalls preparing a range of hot and tasty momos served with red chilli and garlic chutney, soups, thukpa and noodles, among others. Some of the prominent restaurants and cafes in Kalimpong include the Paris Café, Art Café, Lee’s Restaurant, The Silver Dining Room of The Elgin Silver Oaks and Cafe Refuel.

Shopping: There are two main markets in Kalimpong, namely 10th Mile and one starts along the main Rishi Road. These two areas are flooded with vibrant little shops from where you can buy colourful paintings, wall decors, different flavours of Darjeeling tea and a range of Tibetan handicraft products. Apart from all these, people also prefer to shop for woollen clothes from here. Dalle khursani is another highly bought product here. It is a variety of chilli that is considered the hottest and the most dangerous globally! So, take extra precautions and do not touch these bare hands.

Visit monasteries: Kalimpong is home to some mesmerising old and new monasteries that are spread across the place. These little hill station, though small in area, has several gompas that are visited by people in large number, hence making it one of the prime things to do in Kalimpong. Tharpa Choling Monastery and Zang Dhok Palri Phodang (Durpin Dara) are the major ones here that have been attracting tourists from all across. The Tharpa Choling Monastery was established in 1912 by Domo Geshe Rinpoche and is considered one of the oldest Gelugpa monasteries in India.

Paragliding: You can witness the beauty of this cute hill station by opting for paragliding, if interested. People find it interesting soaring high in the sky and witnessing the best gifts of nature up close and personal.

White water river rafting in Teesta river: Although known as the Queen of Hills, Darjeeling is getting increasingly popular for several water sports and one that leads is White Water Rafting. A trip for true rafting enthusiasts which is a half hour drive from the Elgin Silver Oaks Kalimpong through picturesque surroundings down to the Teesta Valley brings one to the tiny town of Melli on the banks of the Teesta river.
