Beyond the Love for Calcutta
Shashi Kapoor’s roots grow deep into the soil of Kolkata, sharing a very special relationship with The Elgin Fairlawn, where he met the love of his life; Jennifer Kendal. The two had met in 1956 while travelling with their respective theatre groups. Shashi Kapoor was a stage manager with Prithvi Theatre, while the beautiful Jennifer Kendal was a part of her father Geoffery Kendal’s Shakespearana group. Room Number 17, which overlooks the palms in the courtyard, was his favourite, a room he always chose when he visited the city. Elgin Fairlawn was so close to the heart of the veteran actor that he spent his honeymoon in the hotel. The room stands still as a living memory of their love.
