Celebrity Guests

The longest staying guests in The Elgin Fairlawn were the Kendal (Bragg) family. Their daughter is the famous British actress Felicity Kendal. The family-owned a traveling Shakespearean theatre company known as Shakespeareana. The repertoire company performed in different places all around India. Some of the performances were also put up in the upstairs Lounge of The Elgin Fairlawn. Geoffrey Kendal and his wife Laura Liddel stayed in this hotel for nearly 30 years from time to time whenever they were in Kolkata. Felicity left India at the age of 20. Their eldest daughter Jennifer was married to the Indian Cinema Superstar Shashi Kapoor of the Kapoor family. The hotel still maintains the “Shashi Kapoor Room” where the couple had their honeymoon.

During the 1950s a famous professional wrestler known as ‘King Kong’ stayed in the hotel. He had a voracious appetite and an equally legendary strength. He ended up breaking many furniture around the hotel and consuming enough food that could suffice a small army. One of the world’s most reputed and respected travel writers, the late Eric Newby and his wife Wanda Skof had stayed here a number of times. Patrick Swayze and the Cast of the ‘City of Joy’ also stayed in this hotel. The Elgin Fairlawn was also featured in the movie. The famous journalist and writer, Tiziano Terzani had organized his son’s wedding here in 1997.
